Ever since the industrial revolution, technology has been transforming the way we work. However, the combination of the development of collaborative robots which are the latest generation of robots and advancement in artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential of driving a dramatic new wave of change across a wide array of workplaces. Here are some of the workplaces set to experiences the most change through the use of smart cobots.

Manufacturing

While robots are nothing new in manufacturing, advances in vision and sensor technology are paving way for the creation of more intelligent,  easier-to-use and lighter machines that are capable of working collaboratively with humans. A cobot can take on a role not only in a factory but also in a wide range of work environments.

As it is, a significant number of factories have already begun introducing robots that are smart enough to bring and take away parts for human workers. The next stage would comprise of robots that can unload and load the parts themselves instead of repeating a set number actions a minute. For this reason manufacturers are taking a keen interest in how cobotics work and their benefits.

Healthcare

Healthcare is another area that is seeing massive developments in artificial intelligence and automation. For instance, wearable devices are driving a change in healthcare since they can monitor the health of a patient with a critical health condition and also check if they have taken their medication.

One major benefit caused by this advancements is that it frees up the hospital staff. A group of hospitals in the US was having difficulties recruiting radiologists but through the installation of remote system, three of their hospitals were able to share one.

Another example is telecare services which are offered to vulnerable adults or people vulnerable to falls. The service, which uses a network of sensors linked either through a telephone line to a call centre is set in a way that it monitors the person’s daily routine. If someone doesn’t wake up in the morning or go to bed at their usual time then an alarm is triggered. For people vulnerable to falling, the service provides an immediate response without having to call an ambulance if a problem occurs.

Security and policing

When of comes to policing the current debate is being focused on the impact of drones. These robotic machines could either be deployed as first responders to a crime scene or emergency thus providing real time coordination and response of all blue light services. Drones will help shift from the current police roles which are mainly focused on the ground response to a more intelligent focus.

While there are some police forces that are already experimenting with this, it might take some more time before drones become full team members of the police force or emergency response team.

Financial services

Companies in the financial services sector are shifting from the use of  analytics and algorithms on the trading floor to using automation and artificial intelligence for the purpose of creating personalized interactions with clients. For instance, there is a smart system that answers questions through a webchat so clients are unaware that a machine is answering their questions.

Big data methods like machine learning can also assist the financial service sector in managing the variety and volume of data. This will help in gaining a greater understanding of consumer behavior. Therefore, these types of algorithms can be used to detect if customers need a new product to optimise their lending, whether they are heading towards default or predict their future product needs.

This can help bring a significant increase in customer loyalty and reduce operational costs as well as improve revenue streams and bring a greater understanding of payments.

Cobots are putting us on the brink of a truly significant change in what we do and how we work across a wide variety of sectors.
